I have several CB radios, as well as GMRS, FRS, and several scanners trunking & non-trunking. In my opinion, if things really got bad, you'll want to have ham radios. The people who are the most serious about survival/preparedness/self-sufficiency seem to be the same people who take the time to get their ham license and spend a little more money to get a ham radio. CB's are cheap & you don't have a license to operate one, so everyone has one. Stop for a minute and think about what is going to happen when people start panicking .... how busy are the CB frequencies going to get, as well as the GMRS & FRS frequencies? My guess is they're going to be pretty much useless.
Even under ideal circumstances, a CB can't compare to a ham radio in the distance that you can transmit and recieve. Unless you want to communicate only with someone within a few blocks of where you are, spend a little time and money. Get a license to operate a ham radio, & buy one. Learn to use it. You'll be glad you did, and you'll make new friends!
